Across Ontario, Physical Educators have recognized that a staggering amount of their students lack basic movement skills. This figure only triples regarding children with disabilities. Stats indicate that children with a disability are at a greater risk for obesity, hypertension, depression and other related health risks.
Sports and physical education have the power to negate these risks, however, studies show that children with a disability are participating less in sports in comparison to children without a disability.
This is due to:
Perceived embarrassment if they make a mistake while playing
Parents/guardians fear of their child getting hurt
Fear of not fitting in
Perceived incompetence in their ability
Physical literacy gives athletes the tools they need to take part in a sport, both for healthy life-long enjoyment and for sporting success.
